The Beast Emerges by Steven Bissett
Suggested age: 14+
The Beast Emerges is a science-fiction adventure written for adults that strong teen readers may also enjoy. This guide can help you decide whether it suits your reader.
The suggested age reflects the novel’s adult-level prose, frequent action, peril, and frightening situations. The book has no conventional profanity or sexual content. Mature younger teens who are comfortable with action-oriented science fiction may also enjoy it.
Sex & Nudity
None. There are no sex scenes, sexual activity, sexual descriptions, or nudity.
Romance
Moderate. Rex and Lily grow closer in this book. They frequently embrace, kiss, and talk about their relationship.
Some kissing is prolonged or passionate. In one emotionally intense scene, Rex repeatedly kisses Lily while reassuring her about their relationship. The scene does not progress to sexual activity.
Their relationship becomes an important part of the story, though the adventure remains the main focus.
Violence & Gore
Moderate. Frequent action includes gunfights, alien attacks, explosions, dangerous creatures, crashes, and physical combat. Characters face repeated life-threatening situations.
Characters are injured and killed. Some injuries involve blood, burns, bites, or other physical trauma, but descriptions do not dwell on gore.
One character’s arm is severely damaged and becomes numb. The characters determine that the affected portion must be amputated. The procedure is not graphically described, and he is later shown recovering with the wound treated.
Another death involves a humanlike being dissolving into dust.
The action is intense, similar to a PG-13 film. There is no graphic gore or gratuitous violence.
Language & Profanity
None. The book contains no conventional profanity.
There are occasional mild expressions involving God or religious language, such as “Thank God” and “for the love of all things holy.”
Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking
Mild. Adults occasionally drink wine in formal or social settings, including during a formal dinner or private meal. Alcohol plays a small part in the characters’ lives, and drunkenness is not a focus.
Two adult male characters smoke cigars in some scenes. Smoking is a background detail.
There is no recreational drug use.
Frightening & Intense Content
Moderate. The story includes alien predators, dangerous environments, fear-based psychic abilities, ominous visions, and tense survival situations.
Some alien creatures attack or stalk the characters and can cause serious injury. Characters are trapped, pursued, stranded, or threatened by hostile forces.
Rex continues to develop psychic abilities connected to fear and darker aspects of the human mind. At one point, he is deliberately placed near a dangerous creature while learning to control and expand his powers.
These scenes are suspenseful and sometimes frightening. The book is written as a science-fiction adventure, with no emphasis on disturbing imagery or gore.
Religious & Spiritual Themes
Prominent fictional elements. The story includes psychic abilities, souls and spirits, visions, apparently sentient planets, ancient beings, and humanlike manifestations of people who lived long ago.
Characters learn that certain planets are living, intelligent beings that can communicate with other life and influence events. Ancient conflicts among these worlds are part of the story’s mythology.
Some beings appear human but are described as memories or manifestations preserved by a living world, rather than ordinary biological people.
These elements belong to the fictional science-fiction setting. The novel does not promote or criticize a real-world religion.
Additional content notes
Death and grief: Characters die in warfare, alien attacks, and dangerous missions. Others deal with grief, guilt, fear of losing loved ones, and the possibility of sacrificing themselves for others.
Fictional politics and warfare: The story involves an interstellar empire, military forces, pirates, rebellion, political conflict, and a galaxy-wide alien threat. These conflicts do not comment on contemporary real-world politics.
Pirates and criminal activity: Several important characters are associated with pirates, smugglers, or other groups operating outside imperial law. The story judges them by their motives and actions, including when they break the law.
