Parent Content Guide

A Son of the Shadows by Steven Bissett

Suggested age: 14+

A Son of the Shadows is an adult science-fiction adventure that has also connected strongly with teen readers. This guide is provided to help parents decide whether the book is a good fit for their individual reader.

The age recommendation is based primarily on the novel’s length, adult-level prose, recurring action violence, and psychological intensity rather than profanity or sexual content. Mature younger teens, particularly experienced science-fiction readers, may also be comfortable with the book.

Content Parent Guide
Profanity None. The book contains no conventional profanity. There are occasional mild expressions such as “Thank God.”
Sexual content / nudity None. There are no sex scenes, sexual descriptions, or nudity.
Romance Mild. Adult characters develop romantic relationships, with kissing, embracing, flirting, and affectionate language. One scene involves an unwanted kiss; the woman resists and the encounter stops without progressing further.
Violence Moderate, recurring, and non-graphic. The story includes fistfights, weapons, explosions, physical assaults, dangerous creatures, and life-threatening situations. Injuries occasionally involve blood, bruising, or damaged teeth, but gore and graphic wound descriptions are avoided. Characters do die during the story, including as a result of psychic abilities and combat.
Frightening / Intense Content Recurring and significant. Fear is an important part of the story and of the protagonist’s psychic ability. The novel includes nightmares, frightening visions, psychic attacks, mind control, induced terror, and characters experiencing severe psychological distress. Some prisoners become unresponsive while others suffer prolonged episodes of screaming and panic. These sequences can be tense or unsettling, although the novel is not written as horror.
Alcohol Present but peripheral. Poor-quality moonshine is used and sold in the setting, particularly in underground taverns. Some background characters drink, but alcohol is not glamorized or central to the protagonists’ lives. Rex explicitly declines to drink when he needs to remain alert.
Smoking Very mild / background. One older adult character occasionally smokes a pipe, primarily during quiet or reflective scenes. It is a minor character detail rather than a focus of the story.
Recreational drugs None. Medical treatment and sedation are referenced, but recreational drug use is not part of the story.
Religion / spiritual themes Prominent fictional elements. The story includes psychic abilities, visions, dreams, concepts of the unconscious, spirits or ghostlike beings, an apparently sentient planet, and an ancient alien religion with priests, temples, and shrines. These elements belong to the fictional science-fiction setting and do not promote or criticize a real-world religion.
Politics / government Significant fictional political conflict. The story deals with an authoritarian interstellar government, political imprisonment, censorship, surveillance, rebellion, corruption, and resistance. There is no contemporary partisan politics or direct real-world political messaging.
Crime / rule-breaking Present. Characters smuggle artifacts, evade authorities, participate in resistance activity, trespass, steal explosives, deceive government officials, and engage in sabotage. These actions occur within the context of resistance to an oppressive fictional government.
Death / grief Present. Death, imprisonment, family loss, and grief are meaningful parts of the story. Several characters die, and one important death late in the novel has a strong emotional impact on the protagonist.
Reading level Adult fiction, accessible to strong teen readers. The novel uses adult prose and includes political, philosophical, and psychological discussions alongside the action and adventure.

Overall tone

A Son of the Shadows is adventurous, suspenseful, and sometimes dark, but it is not nihilistic or grim for its own sake. Friendship, loyalty, courage, love, conscience, self-control, sacrifice, forgiveness, and resistance to coercion are recurring themes throughout the story.
